A Message from Tom Hill to Employees Regarding the COVID-19 Vaccination

The COVID-19 pandemic is having significant effects on our families, communities, the United States and the world. The scale of this challenge is large and widespread, and yet it is also very personal. We recognize and appreciate the steps you have already taken to keep each other safe and our business running to service our customers over the past year. We know these safety measures are not always the most convenient, but they are vital to keeping our people safe and healthy.

To protect the health and safety of our families, coworkers and communities and get beyond this pandemic, we all must continue to do our part to prevent the spread. This includes following current safety protocols (social distancing, wearing a mask, washing your hands, etc.).

This also includes taking advantage of the COVID-19 vaccine.

We feel confident in strongly encouraging everyone who can to receive the COVID-19 vaccine when eligible to minimize the risk of spreading this highly infectious virus. Our leadership team has been closely monitoring guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health officials for up to date safety protocols and practices, as well as information about the launch of the new vaccines. In deciding to encourage vaccinations, we considered the following:

1) The COVID-19 vaccination is a safe way to help build protection—safer than trying to build immunity by getting COVID-19 on purpose: Vaccines have been proven to be one of the most effective tools to rotect our health and prevent disease as they work with our body’s natural defenses to be ready to fight the virus if exposed. As we have seen, COVID19 can have serious, life-threatening complications, and there is no way to know how COVID-19 will affect you. If you get sick, you could spread the disease to your family, friends, coworkers, and others around you.

2) The COVID-19 vaccine will help keep you from getting seriously ill with COVID-19: All COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the U.S. are highly effective, and experts believe that getting the vaccine may also help keep you from getting seriously ill should you get COVID-19. These vaccines cannot give you COVID-19.

The combination of getting vaccinated and following the CDC’s recommendations offer each of us the best protection from COVID-19. We strongly encourage you to consider getting the vaccination. Included below are links to some educational materials about the COVID-19 vaccine and how to protect your friends and loved ones from this highly contagious and deadly virus.

Two doses of the vaccine are currently required when receiving the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. As of February 27th, the FDA has authorized the use of a one shot vaccine manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals which is owned by Johnson & Johnson.

To enable you to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain this potentially lifesaving vaccine when it is available to you, Vulcan will provide you with 4 hours of straight time base pay for each dose of the vaccine, up to a total of 8 hours, regardless of when it is obtained. These hours will not count towards hours worked for the purposes of calculating overtime. To receive this compensation, individuals will need to show a copy of their vaccination certificate to their Plant Office Administrator or Manager who will then be responsible for entering the time in Kronos.

Vulcan is not distributing the vaccine to employees. The CDC is responsible for coordinating the distribution of the vaccine directly from the manufacturer to the states, and each state health department has established its plan for COVID-19 vaccination distribution. Vulcan Materials has been designated as an essential employer, which may allow you to obtain the vaccine earlier than you may have otherwise been eligible. Please contact your HR Representative to receive an Essential Employee letter. Contact your state health department for more information on its specific plan for COVID-19 vaccination distribution and to learn more about when essential workers will be eligible in your area.

We know the past year has been challenging, but the pandemic isn’t over yet. We must remain steadfast and do all that we can to prevent the spread of this disease to protect our families, coworkers and communities. Please continue to practice social distancing, wear a mask in public, avoid large gatherings (both indoor and outdoor), and sanitize and wash your hands frequently. We will get through this by working together as the Vulcan family.
