FAQ

Answers to Your Questions About COVID-19 & Returning to the Office

Returning to the Office

  • We announced several months ago our intent to return to the office on Tuesday, September 7th.
  • We are confident that the return-to-office can be done safely by employees who are vaccinated and follow safety and health protocols, given the proven effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines against severe illness, hospitalization and death.
  • We are confident in this decision because the operations teams have continued to report to their plant sites each and everyday, using these established protocols.  Our 6,000 operations employees have been very successful in managing exposure and addressing positive COVID cases.  They have proven that we can work together and be safe.
  • As we have throughout the pandemic, we will continue to monitor circumstances and make adjustments if necessary.
  • It is time to get people back together, engaging and collaborating face to face, so that we can fully leverage our talented employees, strong culture and strategic disciplines to continue to be the best aggregate company.
  • Collaboration, creativity and engagement is and will continue to be a key to our success as a company.  Additionally, being together in the same building fosters our sense of community and allows us to form strong working relationships, and is important for our overall mental health.
  • The expectation is that all fully vaccinated office staff will return to the office on September 7th.
  • The date to return to the office has been extended out to October 4th to provide those who are unvaccinated more time to obtain the vaccine. Our expectation is that once you have reached full vaccination status, you will return to the office.
  • Per CDC guidelines, an individual is considered to be fully vaccinated:
    • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
    • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.
  • Our goal is for all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have a qualifying medical or qualifying religious reason to not be vaccinated against the virus.
  • Vulcan leaders are confident in the position that the best protection for our people and their families against serious illness, hospitalization and death due to COVID-19 and its variants is a combination of getting vaccinated and following the CDC’s safety protocol recommendations.
  • Medical experts agree that the best way to limit the impact of COVID-19 on our society, business and lives is to maximize vaccination rates.
  • Today, we are relying on Vulcan Family members to do the right thing for themselves, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and our customers.  We believe the right thing is clear: get vaccinated.
  • Vulcan has established a protocol for employees to report COVID symptoms, positive results, and potential exposure. This protocol has been in place since the beginning of the pandemic and will continue to be followed as we return to the office.
  • As soon as an employee is aware of any symptoms of illness, positive COVID-19 test results, or have knowledge that they may have been exposed to COVID-19, the employee will:
    • Contact their supervisor and if at their worksite, leave work immediately;
    • Contact their medical provider;
    • Notify HR if they are referred for testing;
    • Self-quarantine and work from home if symptoms/treatment allow; and
    • Return to the workplace only after receiving clearance by their medical provider AND HR.
  • The employee’s manager will:
    • Immediately send the employee away from their work location, ensuring social distancing and mask guidelines are followed;
    • Notify and provide updates to HR; and
    • Determine if the employee can work from home and notify the employee.
  • HR will:
    • Document the case;
    • Conduct contract tracing to determine whether coworkers should quarantine and notify management;
    • Track the testing date and results for employees who are referred for testing; and
    • Determine when the employee is clear to return to the workplace
  • Yes, of course. Although we’re coming back to the office full-time, flexibility will still be available. While we don’t have a set policy, should an emergency situation such as this arise, contact your supervisor and HR.
  • Keep in mind, as well, that COVID-19 Paid Leave to care for someone with COVID-19, to quarantine due to exposure, or to stay home when you have COVID, continues to be available for all vaccinated employees and employees unable to be vaccinated due to a qualifying medical or religious reason.
  • Vulcan has established a cleaning protocol, which has been in place since the beginning of the pandemic and will continue to be followed as we return to the office.
  • We will complete disinfecting as soon as practical after an individual becomes symptomatic, tests positive or has had a known exposure.
  • Trained personnel will execute the cleaning process following a step-by-step CDC-recommended standard operating procedure:
    • Utilize CDC-approved disinfectants
    • Sanitize all high touch surfaces that were potentially touched by the employee (tables, chairs, telephones, keyboards, appliances, door handles, handrails, light switches, etc.)
  • Yes, we are extending “casual friday” to every business day throughout the month of September.

Vaccination

  • Per CDC guidelines, an individual is considered to be fully vaccinated:
    • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
    • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.

Should the CDC recommend booster shots, the Company will issue guidance relating to booster shots and COVID-19 vaccine pay.

  • Our goal is for all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have a qualifying medical or qualifying religious reason to not be vaccinated against the virus.
  • We want everyone who is still not vaccinated to have ample time to get vaccinated before returning to the office.
  • Vulcan’s leaders are confident in the position that the best protection for our people against serious illness, hospitalization and death due to COVID-19 and its variants is a combination of getting vaccinated and following the CDC’s safety protocol recommendations (frequent hand washing/sanitizing, etc.)
  • Medical experts agree that the best way to limit the impact of COVID-19 on our society, business and lives is to maximize vaccination rates. An analysis of patients at 21 hospitals in 18 states, found sustained protection against hospitalization. Effectiveness overall (all patients) was steady at 86 percent and for adults who do not have compromised immune systems, that effectiveness stood at 90 percent. (Washington Post, August 18, 2021).
  • The FDA fully approved the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine as of Monday, August 23rd.
  • There is ample, valid, verified and reliable scientific evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe.
  • This is all consistent with our Vulcan Way values: people and safety come first. It is also consistent with our commitment to our communities.
  • Today, we are relying on Vulcan Family members to do the right thing for themselves, their families, their friends and their coworkers, and we believe the right thing is clear: get vaccinated.
  • The Company has removed barriers to vaccination (providing paid time off to hourly and non-exempt employees, instructing managers to accommodate employee requests for vaccination during working hours and now pursuing opportunities for on-site vaccinations).
  • We are rewarding employees for making the personal decision to get vaccinated against COVID-19 with a $500 payment. And we are promoting the importance of vaccines to the organization as a whole through the team-based incentives.
  • At the end of this vaccination campaign on October 1st, our leadership will consider the general state of the pandemic, company-wide vaccination rate, associated business risks, and the status of full FDA approval of COVID-19 vaccines. Then leadership will determine whether the right thing to do for our people, our business and our communities is to mandate vaccination for all employees.
  • Our goal is for all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have a qualifying medical or qualifying religious reason to not be vaccinated against the virus.

  • Per CDC guidelines, you can receive the COVID vaccine once you have fully recovered from the COVID-19 virus. However, if you were treated for COVID-19 with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, you should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure what treatments you received or if you have more questions about receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

  • In terms of eligibility for the Vaccine Incentive, the company will provide individuals who have recently had COVID with a short-term medical exemption with proper medical documentation. These individuals will not be included in calculating the group vaccination rate. They will, however, not be eligible for the incentive pay until they are fully vaccinated (1 shot J&J vaccine or 2 shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine).
